How to make animated Discord emoji from a GIF or video
A custom emoji turns a reaction GIF or a moment from a stream into something your whole server can use. Discord wants emoji 128×128 and no bigger than 256 KB, and animated emoji only play from GIF. Our Discord page makes that GIF from any clip — with the background removed and within the limit.
How to make an animated emoji
- Open vidsticker.com/discord and upload a GIF or a video — or paste a YouTube or TikTok link.
- Choose the moment: up to 3 seconds, ideally a short reaction that loops.
- On the Frame tab, a circle or a rounded square keeps the emoji tidy. On the Background tab, “People, animals and objects” or “Drawings and anime” leaves only the hero.
- Press “Make sticker”, then “Download emoji · GIF”: you get a 128×128 GIF under 256 KB.
How to add the emoji to your server
- In the Discord desktop app or at discord.com: click the server name → Server Settings → Emoji → Upload Emoji.
- Choose the GIF. The name is filled in from the file — it can use letters, numbers and underscores, at least 2 characters.
- Or open the emoji picker in a chat and press “Add Emoji”: Discord's emoji editor lets you crop the file and pick the server.
You need the Create Expressions permission or to own the server. Animated emoji have their own slots next to the 50 static ones; Server Boosts add more. Sending animated emoji takes Nitro — that's Discord's rule for all animated emoji, not ours. Without Nitro, make a sticker from the same clip: everyone on the server can send it.
Or let the bot do it: add the vidsticker bot to your server, type /emoji with a video, a GIF or a link, and press “➕ Add emoji to server” under the result. More about the bot
Emoji that read well at small size
- One face or one gesture. In a message an emoji is tiny, so a close-up beats a wide shot.
- Crop tight. The Crop button on the Frame tab — or the background removal, which trims empty space by itself.
- Skip small text. At emoji size it turns into dots; a big single word works better.

Yes: upload a photo and you get a still PNG emoji. Add motion — bounce, pulse or spin on the Motion tab — and it becomes an animated GIF.
Is it free?
Yes, with no watermark. Without signing in — 5 stickers a day; signing in with Discord or Telegram removes the limit.
